The Great Divide is a Myth: Work and Fun CAN Coexist

With the weather warming up and school letting out for the summer, it should be no surprise that we’ve got vacation on our minds. BUT, having fun this summer doesn’t always need to include a trip. (Although we NEVER turn down a good travel opportunity!) Instead of constantly daydreaming about a vacation, start having fun in your day-to-day life. That means AT WORK!

For most of us, our day-to-day life involves going to the office or telecommuting from home. No matter how much you love your job, it’s hard not to get bored or distracted while the summer sun is shining outside. We’re here to tell you that there are ways to make working during the summer a FUN and engaging experience.

Although we’re talking about summer because it’s finally here, these ideas can be applied year-round. Sure, people tend to be more distracted during the summer, but the colder months present their own challenges as well. Incorporating more fun and improving the workplace culture will boost morale and creativity no matter what time of year it is. An energized, creative workforce has an ROI well-worth the effort to actively engage your team in playful, fun experiences.

  1. Get out of the office.

As a remote company, we’ve always gone to where our clients want to be. That said, we regularly suggest meeting outside the office. Be it a coffee shop or a co-working space, we want our clients to get a change of scenery even for a short period of time. We’ve seen that workshops and meetings that take place outside of an office setting garner more creativity from both our team and our clients’ representatives. There’s a different energy when you take personnel outside of their workspace because they can unplug. They can be present without constantly glancing at their desk making mental lists of all the things they should be doing.

  1. Play Hard, Work Harder

You might’ve heard about the activities companies like Google and LinkedIn put together for their employees on a regular basis. They’ve seen the research that suggests employees will be more productive, and happier when playtime is introduced to the workplace. Not only that, but incorporating fun activities for your employees to participate in also encourages a stronger team morale. Now, you don’t need to be fronting the bill for a beach volleyball outing to help bring more fun into the workplace. (But that WOULD be a stellar time.) Instead, start small. A team lunch here, a company happy hour there. Small changes can really ignite creativity!

  1. Encourage Outside-of-the-Box Thinking

We are firm believers that there is no such thing as ‘bad’ ideas. Sometimes, there are just better ideas. One way to get your team’s creative juices flowing is to encourage them to think outside of the box. By allowing for unconventional thinking, you not only discover new plans of action, but you also give your employees a stronger sense of purpose, confidence, and value. Contributing ideas, both conventional and unconventional, is a way for your team to feel more connected to the goal. These invested workers will be more dedicated to their job. You’ll even see an increase in camaraderie amongst their colleagues. When they feel like a valued asset to the team, they’ll encourage and inspire each other to do their best. The trickle-down effect to the products and services you provide your customers can be astronomical!

Creating fun at work isn’t just for the workplace. It’s important to also think about your audience. This could include the customers who are buying your products or services. It could be the other businesses you work with or hope to work with. We customize our client experiences for every presentation, workshop, and meeting. We want the experience to be enjoyable, memorable, meaningful and engaging. Being lighthearted, when appropriate, helps you become more relatable as professionals and as a brand. It will further spawn creativity from your clients as well as your team. In the Digital Age, things can sometimes become rigid, austere, and robotic. However, by incorporating fun while working, you’ll get the most out of your employees by leveraging of the very traits that separate humans from machines. A little bit of play goes a long way when it comes to boosting creativity and improving the workplace morale!
